Why is religion so important for thinking about global health today? This a special edition of First Impressions featuring the winner of the 2016 Grawemeyer Award in Religion. Susan R. Holman talks about her book Beholden: Religion, Global Health, and Human Rights, which was published by Oxford University Press in 2015. Holman is a Senior Writer at the Global Health Education and Learning Incubator at Harvard University, where she has also worked at the Harvard Global Health Institute, as well as the FXB Center for Health and Human Rights. A religion scholar with a passion for history, she holds graduate degrees in nutrition science, theological studies, and a PhD in religion from Brown. Her research focuses on faith-based responses to poverty, disease, and hunger, looking at examples that range from the history of medicine to modern aid efforts.
