Konstanze N’Guessan is lecturer at the Department of Social Anthropology and African Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and research fellow in the research unit “Un/doing Differences. Practices in Human Differentiation” funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, FOR 1939). Her research focuses on West Africa (Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana) and she is particularily interested in nationality, ethnicity, kinship, and religion as fields of human differentiation. She has studied practices of differentiation on the field of symbolic representations, such as cultural and religious performances, practices of commemoration and national day festivities in the history of independence. She has published in a number of peer-reviewed journals (Africa, Journal of Modern African Studies, Nations and Nationalism, Nova Religio). Currently she is working on a book entiteled Histories of Independence: An Ethnography of the past in the present in Côte d’Ivoire.
