John David Penniman is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Bucknell University. His research focuses on the development of Christianity within the cultural worlds of Greece and Rome. His first book, forthcoming from Yale University Press (spring, 2017), explores early Christian ideas about the power of food in the formation of character, ethno-religious identity, and orthodox belief. He is currently at work on a book about early Christianity as an ancient drug culture and is a board member of the working group for Religion, Medicine, Disability, and Health in Late Antiquity. He received his PhD from Fordham University (2015), a masters degree from Emory University (2007), and a BA in Religious Studies from Elon University (2005).
