Ilyse R. Morgenstein Fuerst is Assistant Professor of Religion at the University of Vermont, where she teaches courses on Islam, Hindu traditions, and the history of the study of religion. She specializes in Islam in the context of modern South Asia. Her research addresses the nexus of South Asian Islam, imperial history, and the development of religious categories. Her published work speaks to contours of Muslim and Hindu religious identity, imperial and religious historiographies, and the development of theories of religion. She currently serves on the steering committee for the Study of Islam Section at the American Academy of Religion. Ilyse’s most recent article will be found in the inaugural volume of the Journal for South Asian Religious History and her first book, Indian Muslim Minorities and the 1857 Rebellion: Religion, Rebels and Jihad, is under contract with I. B. Tauris.
